KDF-55 (copper-zinc) handles heavy metals such as lead and copper, and keeps the cartridge from going sour.
Coconut carbon catches the rest, including the smell.

Why people switch to Firstwater
Firstwater vs a regular shower head
The other column is the typical plastic head sold for around $30, not a specific brand.

How it works
The easiest upgrade in your routine is the one before your routine.
Three things Firstwater does differently, in the order you'll notice them.
WHAT'S IN YOUR WATER
Every US city adds chlorine. Your skin gets it hot, at full pressure, every day.
Chlorine keeps tap water safe to drink. In a hot shower it strips the oils that keep skin supple and hair smooth. That's the tightness when you towel off, the flakes, the frizz, the colour that fades early.
- Free chlorine out from the first shower
- Lead, copper and rust from old pipes, out with it
- The pool smell goes the same day
INSIDE THE CARTRIDGE
Three media that work at shower temperature. Not cotton.
Most filtered heads under $40 are a cotton disc and coloured beads. They catch grit and do almost nothing to chlorine in hot water. Firstwater uses the three media proven to work in a hot, fast stream.
- Calcium sulfite — fastest medium there is at free chlorine, better as water gets hotter
- KDF-55 — copper-zinc alloy for heavy metals
- Coconut carbon — catches the rest, including the smell
PRESSURE
Most filtered heads turn into a trickle by week four. Ours doesn't.
The number-one complaint about filtered shower heads: the filter clogs, the water slows to a dribble, and you're back to your old head. That's why we don't measure our pressure on day one with a brand-new filter. We measure it after a month, six weeks and two months of real use.
- Same strong spray on day 60 as day 1 — tested on hard water, with a used filter
- Rinses shampoo out fast. Standard US flow (1.8 gallons a minute); a slightly stronger insert is in the box if your state allows it
Install
Better water in three steps
No tools, no plumber, under three minutes. Everything you need is in the box.
1
Unscrew your old head
By hand, anticlockwise.
2
Twist on Firstwater
Hand-tight is enough. Tilt the ball joint to aim it.
3
Shower
Run it for 30 seconds first. Dip a test strip if you want to see it work.
Try Firstwater for 60 days. The clock starts at your doorstep.
Skin and hair take a few weeks to show it, which is why the guarantee counts from the day it arrives, not the day you order. If it isn't for you, the return label is already in the box. Full refund, no restocking fee.

Frequently asked questions
If your current head unscrews from a pipe coming out of the wall, yes. That's the standard ½-inch US shower arm, the fitting every wall-mount head uses. It doesn't fit handheld hoses or ceiling rain arms. Not sure? Send us a photo of your shower arm and we'll tell you before you order.
Unscrew your old head by hand, wrap three turns of the thread tape we include, twist Firstwater on hand-tight, tilt the ball joint to aim it. Under three minutes, no tools, no plumber. Run it for thirty seconds before your first shower and dip one of the test strips if you want to see it working.
Results vary with your water and your hair, but this is the usual order:
First shower: the pool smell is gone and the water feels softer on your skin.
Week 2: skin isn't tight when you towel off. You reach for less lotion.
Week 4: hair is softer, less frizzy, holds its colour longer. Less of it in the drain.
Week 8: less film on the shower glass.
It won't treat a skin condition, and it won't soften hard water — calcium and magnesium pass through. What it removes is the chlorine and metals that make hard water feel harsh.
Three things we checked against 14,000 reviews of the others. The pressure holds: we flow-test with a cartridge that's been in for 30, 45 and 60 days, not a fresh one. The cap opens by hand at month three, when most brands' have seized. And the number is published: 95% of free chlorine removed over the cartridge's life, tested by SGS to the NSF/ANSI 177 method, report on this page. The standard asks for 50%.
Three media that work in a hot, fast stream — not a cotton pad and coloured beads. Calcium sulfite takes out free chlorine and gets faster as the water gets hotter. KDF-55, a copper-zinc alloy, handles lead, copper and rust from old pipes. Coconut-shell carbon catches the rest, including the smell. A TDS meter won't show the difference — it counts minerals, not chlorine — so use the strips in the box instead.
About every 90 days for a household of two; closer to 60 on very hard water. Falling pressure is your signal, and we email a reminder at day 75.
Cartridges are $29 one at a time, $69 for three, or $25 on autoship every 90 days — cartridges only, we email you a week before each one ships, and skipping or cancelling is one click. If you cancel, you keep the discount you got for signing up.
Sixty days from the day it arrives, not the day you order, because skin and hair take a few weeks to show it. The prepaid return label is already in the box. Send it back and we refund the full amount, no restocking fee, no questions beyond "how could we do better." Autoship can be cancelled at the same time from your account.
